The Confraternity of St. James is a UK-based charity that promotes and advertises pilgrimages along the way of St. James to his shrine in Spain, and also supports and educates pilgrims who are on or who are planning a pilgrimage along any of the many pilgrimage routes.

The Confraternity of St James' offices are located on the north side of Christ Church at 27 Blackfriar's Road.

From the Confraternity of St. James website: (visit link)

"We are a UK-based charity established to promote the pilgrimage to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela. We provide a range of information services to assist prospective pilgrims, of all religions or none, who are planning a walking, cycling or horseback journey along one of the many Camino de Santiago routes.

We can provide all the resources you need to successfully prepare for your own Camino:

Books and guides through our online shop.

Pilgrim passport/credential; find out what this is and how and where to get one.

Advice on routes and many other practical matters including footwear, kit, transport, accommodation and packing light.

Events and local groups where you can get support from experienced pilgrims and meet others planning their own Caminos.

Historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of pilgrimage.

Library and Image Gallery.

Returned pilgrims are encouraged to see The Journey Continues for details of activities and events, and other opportunities to reconnect with the pilgrimage and to share their experience volunteering with the CSJ in the UK, or at one of our two pilgrim hostels in Spain.

Beginning to plan your Camino? A seasoned peregrino? Or simply exploring the idea? We are delighted to welcome you to the CSJ site. Please take a look at About Us and Aims & Objectives for further information on who we are and what we do, for Membership and How to Join Us, and for details of our events and activities in the UK. BUEN CAMINO!

About Us

The Confraternity of Saint James was founded in London by a group of six people in 1983 to bring together those interested in the medieval pilgrim routes through Spain and France to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela, and in the associated rich heritage of art, architecture, history, music and faith.

The CSJ has an office, bookshop and library in central London close to Blackfriars Bridge, open to the public at various set times or by appointment.

Please see Contact Us for details of how to find the office and opening times.

The CSJ currently has some 2000 members and is almost entirely run by volunteers, with only three part-time paid staff. As at November 2014 the CSJ is headed by 13 Charity Trustees/Company Directors and the Secretary. There are many more members who generously volunteer their time and expertise to help run the CSJ, assist new members with information and planning, look after our pilgrim hostels and work as hospitaleros.

CSJ membership is open to all who are interested in the Camino de Santiago whether active pilgrims or more broadly interested in our aims and activities.

Directions to the office:

The office is at the back of Christ Church, 27 Blackfriars Road. The Church is set back from the road, about 300 yards south of Blackfriars Bridge, on your right as you walk away from the bridge (about 100 yards south of the intersection with Southwark Street).

Face the Church from the road, then come round to the right hand side: our door is on the end of the wing. Our brass plate and intercom bell are by the door marked 27A.

Nearest tube is Southwark (Jubilee line) but Blackfriars and Waterloo are each about 10 mins walk away; London Bridge is about 20 mins walk. Blackfriars overground on the line from Bedford to Brighton is open. Buses 45 and 63 from King’s Cross and the 100 from Liverpool Street stop on the opposite side of the road."
