This obelisk was built in 1842-43 by William Nixon to remember four men who were executed for their religious beliefs in the town during a time of turmoil leading up the reformation. The men were, Patrick Hamilton 1527, Henry Forest 1533, George Wishart 1546, and Walter Myln 1558. The cause eventually prevailed and Scotland became protestant in 1560. The monument, which is made from locally quarried sandstone, is 10 metres tall and stands on the west facing slope overlooking the west sands and Royal and Ancient clubhouse. It was restored, 2011-13.
