The Heritage Museums and Gardens Art Museum contains an interesting and diverse collection of (primarily) American works of art. The museum is essentially divided into three sections, the most prominent of which is the Carousel Rotunda. The rotunda contains a fully functioning 1912 Carousel (free rides are offered on a continuous basis), and a variety of carved animal figures from other carousels including a lion, a frog, a pig, and a rabbit.
Just off the rotunda is the Folk Art Gallery, which contains amazing collections of carved wooden sculptures and statues, Early American weathervanes, vintage business signs, and 19th century paintings of children.
At the other end of the museum, the Changing Gallery is currently being used to exhibit "Saving Our Ships: The Sea-Paintings of Charles Robert Patterson". Born in England in 1878, Patterson's paintings in the early 1920's coincided with the "ship-lovers" movement. The exhibit features works done in oil and watercolor, lithographic prints, photographs and other items encompassing the life work of the artist from 1892 until his death in New York City in 1958.
