Gruber-Stein is geologically related protected natural monument in Upper Austria, near town Steyregg.
Gruber-Stein is named after Franz Gruber, Austrian geologist that discovered this rock and described its geological significance.
Three different rock types can be recognized withing this rock - granite, gneiss and aplite. Granite is the main rock of this structure. It consists of three minerals - quartz, feldspar, and mica. Gneiss can be recognized as greenish slabs of angular shape and schistous texture. Aplite are parts of structure that are strands of light-colored rock. Granite and aplite are both igneous intrusive rocks, while gneiss is metamorphic rock. Aplite has the same mineral composition as granite, but the grains are much finer in aplite - under 1 mm.
