Till 1989 the iron curtain divides Germany and Europe and at this place was one of the busiest border crossings between Western Europe and the Warshaw Pact. Most of the transit traffic to Poland and Russia have to cross the border at this place and naturally have to pay toll.

Nowadays, these buildings are used as a frontier museum.
