One of the main attractions of the 1896 Wold Expo, officially the Great Industrial Exposition of Berlin was the Riesenfernrohr, the Giant Telescope. Until this day, it remains the world's largest freely movable telescope.
A new observatory, the Volkssternwarte (People's Observatory) was built to host the telescope. Today, 120 years later, the observatory and the telescope - still functional - are still attracting visitors. In 1946, the observatory was named Archenhold Observatory after the builder of the telescope.
