We can now visit the Birthplace of François Mitterrand, former President of the Republic, located 22 rue Guy Abel in Jarnac. Born on 26 October 1916, little Frank grew up there, has lived with his siblings from 1919-1934.
Fifth child of a family of eight, his father was part of railways Paris Orleans where he ended his career as Head of Angoulême station in 1919 before joining Jarnac to live there and pick up management family vinegar. His mother, very religious, was a woman very committed and very involved in the town of Jarnac, especially to those in need. She watched with great care to education and culture of his eight children. The cultural life of the little family was intense: classic readings, theater and long evenings at once entertaining and studious.
In 1925, François Mitterrand between the St. Paul College in Angouleme. He graduated in 1934 and went to Paris that year to continue his studies at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences.
Emappntré in the resistance in 1942 after his escape from Germany, it manages the network of former prisoners of war and form its own network. Recognized by General de Gaulle, he was appointed minister in 1946. He participated in several governments of the Fourth Republic.
In 1981, François Mitterrand made history by becoming the President of the French Republic until 1995 after being re-elected in 1988.
Jarnac also made history as the birthplace of the President of the Republic, which provided, in its official gift to foreign guests, a world map on which are plotted the French cities that were dear to him: Jarnac, Château-Chinon, Latché, Solutré.

On peut désormais visiter la Maison Natale de François Mitterrand, ancien Président de la République, située 22 rue Abel Guy à Jarnac. Né le 26 octobre 1916, le petit François y a grandi, l’a habité avec ses frères et sœurs de 1919 à 1934.
Cinquième enfant d’une famille de huit, son père était cadre des chemins de fer Paris-Orléans où il a terminé sa carrière comme Chef de la gare d’Angoulême en 1919 avant de rejoindre Jarnac pour y habiter et reprendre plus tard la gestion de la vinaigrerie familiale. Sa mère, très pieuse, était une femme très engagée et très investie dans la ville de Jarnac, notamment auprès des personnes nécessiteuses. Elle veillait avec grand soin à l’éducation et à la culture de ses huit enfants. La vie culturelle de la petite famille était intense : lectures classiques, théâtre et longues veillées à la fois distrayantes et studieuses.
En 1925, François Mitterrand entre au collège Saint-Paul à Angoulême. Il obtient son baccalauréat en 1934 et part à Paris la même année afin d’y poursuivre ses études à la Faculté de Droit et des Sciences Politiques.
Emappntré dans la résistance en 1942 après son évasion d’Allemagne, il anime le réseau des anciens prisonniers de guerre et forme son propre réseau. Reconnu par le Général de Gaulle, il est nommé ministre en 1946. Il participe à plusieurs gouvernements de la IVème République.
En 1981, François Mitterrand entre dans l’histoire en devenant Président de la République Française jusqu’en 1995 après avoir été réélu en 1988.
Jarnac entre aussi dans l’histoire comme étant ville natale du Président de la République, qui offrait, en cadeau officiel à ses hôtes étrangers, une Mappemonde sur laquelle sont reportées les villes françaises qui lui étaient chères : Jarnac, Château-Chinon, Latché, Solutré.

Built on the site of the last authorized Protestant church before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the present house was purchased in 1850 by the great grandfather of the President, Leon Lorrain Beaupré. Since then the house remained property of the family Lorrain, then ceded to François Mitterrand's parents. On the death of his father Joseph, Colette Landry, who bought the house to his siblings. At his death in August 2004, his children and grandchildren sell the house to the town of Jarnac who becomes the owner in June 2005.
François Mitterrand was born October 26, 1916 and lived there throughout his childhood. When President he returned Rue Guy Abel, he said, "When I return, I found my house as it was, it was the same parts, the same scenery."
Visitors can browse the coins President, child and adult, lived and soak the living environment that marked and accompanied.
An exhibition of photos and unpublished documents, set up by the Institut François Mitterrand, gets to know the family and youth of the President.
Construite sur l’emplacement du dernier temple protestant autorisé avant la révocation de l’ Édit de Nantes, l’actuelle maison a été acheté en 1850 par l’arrière grand père du Président, Léon Beaupré Lorrain. Depuis cette date la maison est restée propriété de la famille Lorrain, puis cédée aux parents de François Mitterrand. À la mort de son père Joseph, c’est Colette Landry, qui rachète la maison à ses frères et sœurs. À sa disparition en août 2004 ses enfants et petits enfants vendent la maison à la commune de Jarnac qui en devient propriétaire en juin 2005.
François Mitterrand y est né le 26 octobre 1916 et y a vécu toute son enfance. Lorsque, Président, il revenait Rue Abel Guy, il disait "Quand j’y retourne, j’y retrouve ma maison telle qu’elle était, ce sont les mêmes pièces, les mêmes décors".
Les visiteurs peuvent parcourir les pièces que le Président, enfant et adulte, a habité et s’imprégner du cadre de vie qui l’a marqué et accompagné.
Une exposition de photos et de documents inédits, mise en place par l’Institut François Mitterrand, permet de mieux connaître la famille et la jeunesse du Président.
