According to local tradition, it was the appearance of the Archangel Michael to San Lorenzo Maiorano, bishop of Siponto, in 490 which was the reason for transforming the Monte Sacro from a place of pagan worship into a place of Christian worship. Around the year one thousand a group of monks built a small monastery there, documented as an Abbey already a hundred years later. Following a period of prosperity, in the fifteenth century, the Abbey was merged with that of Siponto and abandoned. There followed a long period of decline that brought the Abbey to the current state of ruin, from which, however, the original structure is still visible : the abbey church with the bell tower, the dormitory cells, the baptistery, the refectory with the kitchen, tanks, the cloister, the courtyard, the warehouses, the stables and the lookout tower. The church has a façade divided by three large blind pointed arches resting on columns supporting the arches and frame the access portal. The courtroom to three aisles with apses is divided into five bays, with arches supported by pillars. On the walls you can see traces of frescoes.
