During the occupation, the interior of the synagogue badly damaged. The Holy Ark was completely destroyed, part of the Torah scrolls was transferred to Amsterdam, the rest have been lost. The ritual objects were preserved and after the war, donated to the synagogue of Eindhoven.

After the war, only a few Jews returned to Meppel. The Jewish community was officially dissolved in 1964 and merged into that of Zwolle. The synagogue, which was sold soon after the war, was demolished in 1960 as part of an urban renewal, as the Jewish school in Touwstraat.
