"Brimham Rocks are balancing rock formations on Brimham Moor in North Yorkshire, England. The rocks stand at a height of nearly 30 feet in an area owned by the National Trust.

There are many variations of rock formations, caused by Millstone Grit being eroded by water, glaciation and wind, some of which have formed amazing shapes. Many formations have been named, though imagination is required and the correct viewing angle is helpful. Examples include the Sphinx, the Watchdog, the Camel, the Turtle and the Dancing Bear. The area was recognized as being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1958." link

The frame, one of a number on different National Trust sites, was inspired by Yorkshire artist Ashley Jackson. "To see the spirit of Yorkshire and its moors through your eyes is one thing Many people look but only a few will see and feel its very soul...

I have always advised students to create a frame to allow them to ‘find the view’ which they wish to capture in to a painting. It allows them to focus on one area at a time rather than being over faced with everything that they have in front of them.

Moving on from this idea I thought how fantastic it would be if larger frames could be created that allowed us to see the landscape for what it is, an ever changing painting situated in natures open air gallery, something that is free to us all and hence the ‘exhibition’ of Framing the Landscape was created. link

The frame is outside the National Trust visitor centre facing the area with the biggest concentration of stones and a popular picnic spot.

Entrance to the area is free and has a number of public footpaths through the area. However there is a car parking charge for non National Trust members.
