Die Großmarkthalle Leipzig (Kohlrabizirkus) wurde am 17.10.2013 aufgrund ihrer 1929 in Schalenbauweise errichteten Stahlbetonkuppeln als 'Historisches Wahrzeichen der Ingenieurbaukunst in Deutschland' ausgezeichnet.
Sie wurde 1927 bis 1929 errichtet und diente bis 1994 als Handelsort für Obst und Gemüse in Leipzig. Aufgrund dieser spezifischen Nutzung und der Dachkonstruktion trägt das Gebäude bis heute den Namen 'Kohlrabizirkus'.
Die zwei Dachkuppeln mit einer jeweiligen Spannweite von 75m galten damals als eine technische Sensation und waren zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Errichtung die größten Massivkuppeln der Welt.
Die zwei Hallen werden bis heute für Flohmärkte, Konzerte und andere Veranstaltungen genutzt. Zeitweise befand sich in der Südhalle die größte Indoor-Eislauffläche Deutschlands.

The 'Großmarkthalle Leipzig' was built from 1927 to 1929 and served until 1994 as a marketplace for fruit and vegetables in Leipzig. Because of this specific use and the specific roof construction, the building still has the name 'Kohlrabizirkus'.
The two roof domes with a respective span of 75 meters were regarded as a technical sensation. At the time of its establishment they were the greatest massive domes in the world.
Up to this day the two halls are used for flea markets, concerts and other events. For a long time the largest indoor ice rink in Germany was located in the south hall of the 'Kohlrabizirkus'.
