Das UT-Connewitz ist eines der ältesten noch erhaltenen Lichtspieltheater Deutschlands und das älteste Leipzigs. Am 1. Weihnachtsfeiertag 1912 wurde das Kino mit dem Stummfilm „Die schwarze Katze“ von Viggo Larsen eingeweiht. Zu dieser Zeit hieß das Kino noch 'Cammerlichtspiele'. Acht Jahre später (1920) wurde es in 'Union-Theater Connewitz' (UT-Connewitz) umbenannt und gehörte damit zur damals erfolgreichsten Kinokette Deutschlands - 'Union'. Zwischen 1970 und der zwischenzeitlichen Schließung 1992 hieß das Kino 'Filmtheater Connewitz'. Bereits zur DDR-Zeit war das Kino ein beliebter Treffpunkt für die alternative Szene Leipzig. So gab es damals neben Filmvorführungen bereits auch Konzerte der DDR-Punkszene.
Nach 1992 stand das Kino etwa neun Jahre leer. Im Jahr 2001 gründete sich dann der Verein 'UT Connewitz e.V.' und machte das historische Kinogebäude zu einem neuen Kulturort mit Konzerten, Lesungen sowie Film- und Theatervorführungen. Bis heute ist das UT-Connewitz ein beliebter Treffpunkt und eine der schönsten Veranstaltungs-Locations Leipzigs.
Etwas besonders am UT-Connewitz ist neben der langen Geschichte auch die Bausubstanz. Die Gestaltung des Lichtspieltheaters orientiert sich an klassischen Theaterbauten mit Rang und Bühne. Die Bühne selbst ist einem griechischen Tempel nachempfunden. Der gesamte Innenraum (bis auf die Bestuhlung) ist noch im Originalzustand von 1912. Nur die Außengestaltung ist schlicht und zwischen den Geschäften und Wohnhäusern fast schon unauffällig. (siehe Bild)

The UT-Connewitz is one of the oldest surviving movie theater in Germany and the oldest of Leipzig. On the first Christmas Day 1912, the theater was open with the silent film "The Black Cat" by Viggo Larsen. At that time the cinema was still called 'Cammerlichtspiele'. Eight years later (1920) it was renamed 'Union Theatre Connewitz' (UT-Connewitz) and became part of the most successful cinema chain in Germany of that time - 'Union'. Between 1970 and the interim closure in 1992 the cinema called 'Filmtheater Connewitz'. During the GDR-period the cinema was a popular meeting place for the alternative scene in Leipzig. Besides movie-screenings also concerts of the GDR-punkscene took place in this Building.
After 1992 the theater was empty for about nine years. In 2001 the association 'UT Connewitz e.V.' founded and made the historic cinema building to a new cultural center with concerts, readings, film and theater performances. For now the UT-Connewitz is a popular meeting place and one of the most beautiful event locations of Leipzig.
In addition to the long history of the movie theater the architecture of the building is specially. The design of the movie theater based on classic theater buildings with rank and stage. The stage itself is modeled like a greek temple. The entire interior (except for the chairs) is still in its original condition by 1912. Only the exterior design is unimpressive and between the shops and houses almost inconspicuous. (see images)
