All living UConn Husky mascots are named Jonathan in honor of Jonathan Trumbull, the last colonial and first state Governor of Connecticut. Therefore the statue is also named Jonathan the Husky. It was commissioned in 1992 by the then president of UConn Harry Hartley. In the summer of 1993 the contract to produce the sculpture was awarded to Larry S. Wasiele, the man who had previously created the UConn Husky logo. The 6' high by 7' long, 1000 pound, bronze statue of the Jonathan the Husky was unveiled on the UConn campus at Storrs on May 12, 1995.
The statue depicts Jonathan the Husky standing on a rock outcrop with his right front paw slightly raised and his tail curled over his back. A bronze plaque attached to a rock below the statue is has the head of a husky and the following inscription:
