EN: On Christmas Day 1875, the stairwell of the school of Hellikon collapsed during an Christmas party organized by the Women's Club because of design errors. The disaster claimed 76 lives, many of them children. The victims were buried in the cemetery in the neighboring village Wegenstetten.
The monument to the victims of the disaster was built in 1877. It is a square pillar with etched Gothic pointed archs and a statue atop. On all four sides of the column, the names of the victims are engraved. On the front of the pedestal is written: "Great was the disaster, still greater is love".
In the beginning, I was a irritated about the fact that the text several times uses the word "fallen", but apparently in 1877 this word was not yet a specific military term for killed in action as in today's German and meant literally.
DE: Am Weihnachtstag 1875 stürzte das Treppenhaus der Schule von Hellikon während einer vom Frauenverein organisierten Weihnachtsfeier auf Grund von Konstruktionsfehlern ein. Das Unglück forderte 76 Menschenleben, darunter viele Kinder. Die Opfer wurden auf den Friedhof im benachbarten Wegenstetten beigesetzt.
Das Denkmal für die Opfer der Katastrophe wurde 1877 errichtet. Es ist eine quadratische Säule mit eingravierten gotischen Spitzbogen und einer Statue auf der Spitze. An allen vier Seiten der Säule sind die Namen der Opfer eingraviert. Auf der Vorderseite des Podests steht: "Gross war das Unglück, grösser noch die Liebe".
Ich war zu Beginn etwas irritiert, dass im Text mehrfach "Gefallene" vorkommt, aber offenbar war dieses Wort 1877 noch nicht so spezifisch für Opfer kriegerischer Handlungen wie heute und ganz wörtlich gemeint.
