A Mississippi historic marker along US 90 in Waveland MS reminds of a popular vineyard and resort that would have lured travelers to stop along the OST until the 1920s, when Brown's Vineyard was shut down -- a victim of Prohibition.
The historic marker for Brown's Vineyard is put here for a reason (it's not a random choice): the next street that joins the 90 at an angle is the 1920s Old Spanish Trail route to Bay St. Louis. Brown's Vineyard was a short ways southeasterly down the OST from Waveland.
The turn-off onto the old OST is located at N 30* 18.077 W 89* 23.513.
The historic marker reads as follows:
"BROWN'S VINEYARD
Located at this site, Brown's Vineyard, established 1874, was a popular resort during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The wine, produced on site from scuppernong grapes, was marketed and sold across the United States. The vineyard, which also provided entertainment, was forced to close in 1920 due to Prohibition."
