A sign on this draw well tells a little of its history:

In 1844 a territorial road, 70 miles long, between Iowa City and Oskaloosa, was built. A mail coach left Iowa City every Wednesday at 4:00 in the morning, and arrived in Oskaloosa at 8:00 that night, traveling along this “Angling Road.” Many others, on horseback, on foot, and in covered wagons, made their way west on the road. About 16 miles southwest of Iowa City these travelers were able to rest a bit in a village of Amish (near present-day Joetown), and drink from the old oaken bucket in this well, at “Sixteen Mile House.”
