history of the place:
The location chosen for the construction of the Town Hall, Moot Court is located near the abbey (two blocks west). In 1865, the project description mentions the opening of a street, it is probably the so-called street portion of the Old-Town Hall located between Church Street and Emile-Verdon Street (on former cadastre that location was not built). The work was completed in 1870 on plans by architect Latch Parthenay. The assembly comprises, in the central body: the council services, justice of the peace, two slots for two teachers, dormitories and attics; in the wings classes, one for Catholic students and one for the Protestant students. Courses and playgrounds complete the package. The town hall-school lost its original purpose; One wing houses the municipal library today. The current town hall was installed in 1950 in a house on the road to Limoges (AD 217).

L'emplacement choisi pour la construction de la mairie-école-tribunal se situe à proximité de l'abbatiale (deux îlots à l'ouest). En 1865, la description du projet mentionne l'ouverture d'une rue : il s'agit vraisemblablement de la portion de rue dite de l'Ancienne-Mairie située entre la rue de l'Eglise et la rue Emile-Verdon (sur l'ancien cadastre cet emplacement n'était pas bâti). Les travaux sont terminés en 1870 sur plans de l'architecte Loquet de Parthenay. L'ensemble comprend, dans le corps central : les services de la mairie, la justice de paix, deux logements pour deux instituteurs, des dortoirs et greniers ; dans les ailes les classes, l'une pour les élèves catholiques et l'autre pour les élèves protestants. Des cours et préaux complètent l'ensemble. La mairie-école a perdu sa destination première ; une des ailes abrite aujourd'hui la bibliothèque municipale. La mairie actuelle a été installée vers 1950 dans un logis situé sur la route de Limoges (AD 217).
