This timeline for the Superior National Forest is located in the Kawishiwi Ranger Station on the east edge of Ely. It relates the development of the wilderness from the years 1902 through 2004. The history reads as follows:

1902-1908: Public lands withdrawn from availability for settlement.

1909: Superior National Forest established by President Roosevelt. Quetico Provincial Park established.

1920: Proposed highway system threatens wilderness character.

1926: Initial primitive area established by Secretary of Agriculture.

1930: Shipstead Newton Nolan Act protects water levels and lakeshore by prohibiting dams and restricting logging within 400 feet of recreational waterways on the Superior National Forest.

1930-1941: Forest Service acquires tax delinquent land in primitive area – Civilian Conservation Corps builds many portages & foot trails.

1938: Forest Service establishes Superior Roadless Primitive Area with boundaries similar to BWCA.

1941: Forest Service establishes 362,000 acres “no cut” zone.

1948: Thye Blatnik Act authorizes purchase of resorts and private lands.

1949: President Truman issues Executive Order which prohibits landing planes on lakes & flights below 4,000 feet.

1958: Forest Service changes name of Superior Roadless Area to Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).

1964: Wilderness Act designates the BWCA as part of National Wilderness Preservation System.

1966-1971: Visitor use policies established: BWCA permits required, limits on group size, cans & bottles prohibited.

1971: State of Minnesota adopts rules protecting states lands in BWCA

1978: BWCAW Act eliminates logging & snowmobiling, restricts mining & motorboats & increases Wilderness Acreage to nearly 1.1 million acres.

1998: Transportation Equity Acts allows operation of two motorized portages & eliminates motorboat use on Canoe & Alder Lakes. User fees collected with receipts going directly back into Wilderness management.

2001: Policy to treat 73,000 acres of fuel in BWCAW, responding to 1999 blowdown of 367,000 acres of trees in Wilderness.

2004: Forest Plan revised with minimal changes to wilderness management.

The center is open 7 AM - 4:30 PM seven days per week
