A sign in the oriental garden includes the following information:
"This site has a long oriental association. In 1917 it was developed as a Japanese garden, with wisteria, bamboos, conifers, irises, camellias and maples (some of which are still present in this garden). In 1921 a pergola and two torii (Japanese ceremonial gateways) were erected and the three Japanese-style sandstone lanterns still here were carved by the Domain stonemason Mr. F.J. Read. The three granite lanterns nearby were a gift from Sydney's sister city of Nagoya in 1984."
