There used to be a number of mills in this area, but they have since been demolished. Also although Brinksway Bridge used to carry a busy road over the River Mersey a new modern girder bridge replaced it when the nearby M60 motorway junction was built.
The old bridge is now restricted to pedestrian and cyclist use only and the sub station has become rather isolated, but is still in use.
At the time it was built the sub station was in a more important position and this is reflected in the fact that it has an attached shelter, may have been a bus shelter, but appears to be at the wrong angle for that.
The rear of the sub station descends to the level of the River Mersey and has a river gauge attached to it.
