The original early medieval church of St. Barnabas was built in 809 by the Adorni family. Church was destroyed by fire in 1105, rebuilt by local parishioners and finally consecrated in 1350 by two bishops - Francesco Mociense of the Minorite order, and Agnellino Sudense of the Predicatory order. Falling down from age, it was completely renovated in Neoclassical style according to the project of architect Lorenzo Boschetti in 1776.

The church's façade from Istrian white marble is designed as Greek temple front with Corinthian style columns and triangular pediment. Church is a single nave construction with 3 side altars. The ceiling features a trompe l'oeil painting of "St. Barnabas in Glory" by Constantino Cedini, who was a follower of famous Tiepolo. There is also a 14th century "The Holy Family" by Veronese. In the inside, it hosts a permanent exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci’s machines, so that observation of the interior decoration may result quite difficult.

The church is also known from popular culture - it was used as a library in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
