Original facilities included two manually operated 75 foot diameter turntables, each with 42 radiating tracks. 21 of the roads for the No. 1 turntable were covered by a wooden framed roundhouse building, right from the start (of the same design/architectural plan as the Eveleigh roundhouse in Sydney).
In 1948 work commenced on erecting a second (brick-walled) building for turntable No. 2.
The 75 foot No. 2 turntable was rebuilt to 100 feet (with a later extension to 105 feet to accommodate the length of the AD60 class locos). Unfortunately an electric motor was placed only on one end of the turntable.
Another problem was the high water-table of the low-lying yard, and the pit of the turntable had to be pumped whenever it rained.
Every bay is occupied by heritage listed locos or carriages.
