This statue is "The boy with the thorn" and was presented to Charnwood Borough Council by its twin town of Epinal in May 1957. The "Boy with a thorn" is Greco-Roman Hellenistic bronze sculpture of a boy pulling a thorn from the sole of his foot, and copies of this sculpture can be found across the world. At one time, during the 1980s, this one went missing. He was found a couple of years later by a former Loughborough University student, abandoned in a brook in Yorkshire.
The ancient original of this statue is in the Capitol Museum in Rome.

A plaque on the plinth reads:
PINAU
The Boy with the Thorn
has stood in the old town of Epinal since
the XVth century. Suffering many vicissitudes
and witness of many wars. The statue and its
successive replicas symbolise the town's name
in the minds of its inhabitants.
Their Chief Citizen
Conseiller C. Guthmuller
presented this replica to Loughborough to
commemorate the twinning of the two towns.
The original ancient statue stands in
the Capitol Museum in Rome.
