The inhabitants of Meppel are also called "Meppeler mosquito" or called mosquito sprayers, following a folk tale, which is known across multiple locations around the world.
The legend has it that one night some people thought the church on fire, because there is a cloud of smoke hung Meppeler the tower, but it turned out to be a swarm of fireflies and mosquitoes.
