Santo Antão is one of the most populous islands of Cape Verde but one of the few with no airport. In the island, as in the rest of the country, immigration has been intense since the independence from Portugal (1975). Most people moved to the former colonial power, others went to France and USA.

As the island has no airport, anyone trying to find a better life somewhere in the world had to go by boat so it makes a lot of sense to have this monument here, near the ferry terminal.

The monument is a statue of a woman waving goodbye with one hand, the other holding a child.

Sculptor was Domingos Luisa.
Who placed it?: Unknown

When was it placed?: 4th August 2000

Who is honored?: The women left behind by migrating males
