John Colvin was a lieutenant-governor of the northwest provinces of British India who died of cholera in the Agra Fort during the peak of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. His body could not be carried out of the fort (which after the fall of the Mughals, the British establishment in India converted into a military garrison).

The selection of the burial location is often criticized for the insensitivity, considering the significance of the place. Within the sprawling palace-fort complex, the incongruously Gothic Christian tomb of John Colvin is located in front of the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience) where the Peacock Throne was placed.

The inscription on the tomb reads:

"In memory of John Russell Colvin born May 29th 1807, died in this fort, September 9th 1857, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, India."
