| Cruz do Castelo de Belmonte - [Belmonte, Castelo Branco, Portugal] |  A construção do Castelo de Belmonte é atribuída a D. Sancho I, por volta do século XIII, vindo a ser melhorado no reinado de D. Dinis, nomeadamente com a edificação de uma nova Torre de Menagem, mas as escavações arqueológicas feitas no seu interior, comprovam a ocupação romana desta zona.
Esta fortaleza esteve envolvida nas guerras da sucessão, depois da morte de D. Fernando, em 1383, mas a sua função militar chega praticamente ao fim, no reinado de D. Afonso V, que entrega o castelo a Fernão Cabral, pai do navegador Pedro Álvares Cabral, cuja família ao longo dos anos o transformou em residência.
Ainda durante a Guerra da Restauração o castelo terá sido melhorado em termos de defesa, mas em fins do século XVII, o interior do castelo foi danificado por um incêndio, na zona residencial, que levou ao seu abandono.
Um dos edifícios do castelo chegou a fincionar como prisão já no século XX, está classificado como Monumento Nacional e actualmente é utilizado para fins culturais, tendo, o IPPAR, em curso obras de beneficiação e a instalação de uma área museológica.
O castelo construído em pedra granítica, tem a fachada principal, orientada para o sul, com uma porta encimado pelas armas dos Cabral, cuja memória está também presente nas ruínas do antigo Paço onde residiram e onde se destaca uma janela de estilo Manuelino.
|  The construction of Belmonte Castle is attributed to D. Sancho I, around the thirteenth century, been improved in the reign of King Dinis, namely the building of a new main tower, but the archaeological excavations inside , demonstrate the Roman occupation of the area.
This fortress was involved in the wars of succession after the death of Ferdinand in 1383, but its military function comes practically to an end the reign of King Afonso V, which delivers the castle to Ferdinand Cabral, father of Peter browser Alvares Cabral, whose family over the years turned him into residence.
Also during the Restoration War the castle have been improved in terms of defense, but in the late seventeenth century, the interior of the castle was damaged by fire in the residential area, which led to its abandonment.
One of the castle buildings reached fincionar as a prison in the twentieth century, is classified as a national monument and is now used for cultural purposes, with the IPPAR, ongoing improvement works and the installation of a museum area.
The castle built in granite stone, has the main facade, oriented to the south, with a door surmounted by the weapons of Cabral, whose memory is also present in the ruins of the ancient palace where resided and where he highlights a Manuelino window.
