Powell Symphony Hall was built in 1925 originally as the St. Louis Theatre, a venue for live vaudeville as well as motion pictures. The theater was purchased by Saint Louis Symphony Society in 1966. The building underwent an extensive renovation to become the 2,689-seat Powell Symphony Hall. The first concert in the newly renovated hall was January 24, 1968. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2001.
