Lalgarh Palace is a palace in Bikaner in the Indian state of Rajasthan, built for Sir Ganga Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner, between 1902 and 1926. In 1972, Karni Singh, M.P., the Maharaja of Bikaner, established the Ganga Singhji Charitable Trust. The Maharaja endowed a part of Lallgarh Palace to be used in service of the trust. Two wings were converted into independent hotels with the income from The Lallgarh Palace Hotel, a heritage hotel used to support the trust. Currently, Lallgarh Palace is owned, and the hotel is run, by his daughter Princess Rajyashree Kumari. We had a one night stay at the Lalgarh Palace in November 2015.
The sign reads:
"YAGYASHALA - This red stone building called "Yagyashala", was constructed in the year 1920-21 for performance of religious ceremonies by the royal family of Bikaner. In keeping with the tradition of ancient Rajput rulers, his late Highness Maharaja Ganga Singhji was weighed against gold (Tuladan) for the purposes of charity during his golden jubilee celebration in the year of 1937. The weighing (Tuladan) took place in a pair of huge scale set up in the Yagyashala to the chanting of Sanskrit hymns by the priests. His highness took his seat on one of the scale while ingots of pure gold from his privy purse were slowly piled up on the other. This gold was utilized for the purposes of pubic charities such as construction of children ward in P.B.M. hospital, T.B. hospital, museum and other public utility buildings."
