In 1806 the great Italian sculptor Antonio Canova received the assignment for an equestrian statue of Napoleon, to be placed in front of Royal Palace in Naples. With the fall of Napoleon in 1815 the work was interrupted and in 1817, after the return of Borbon dynasty, Ferdinand I asked Canova to complete the statue posing on the horse the image of his father Charles. Carlos Sebastián de Borbón y Farnesio was king of Naples and Sicily from 1735 to 1759 and then king of Spain. He followed the archaeological investigations on Herculanum, Pompeii and Stabiae, destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and established the Herculanum Academy in 1755 with the aim of managing the great historical and artistic heritage. The model was ready in 1818 and the bronze cast in 1819. The horse, with the solid head, the dilated nostrils and the open mouth as after a rapid run, is valued as the best part of the monument.
Sided by the monument there is the equestrian statue of Ferdinand I, by Canova and Antonio Calì.
