The Macclesfield Canal was built in 1831, and although no longer used commercially is still popular with leisure boaters.

When the canal was built each of the locks on the canal had a side pond to save water. However when the number of boats using the canal reduced in number the side ponds were abandoned.

This side pond is now being actively managed to attract all sorts of wildlife.

The information board has information about the wildlife to be found in the side pond and on the canal.
