Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kosciuszko fought on the American side in the American Revolutionary War. After his death his body was transferred to a crypt at Wawel Cathedral, a pantheon of Polish kings and national heroes.

Entrance is free to the Cathedral but access to the crypts where this memorial is located requires paid admission. The text of the plaque reads :

On the bicentennial of the victory of Saratoga October 17, 1777 a grateful America remembers T. Kosciuszko fighter for your and our freedom.

A gift to the people of Poland by joint resolution of the Congress of the United States.

In 1776, Kosciuszko moved to North America, where he took part in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel in the Continental Army. An accomplished military architect, he designed and oversaw the construction of state-of-the-art fortifications, including those at West Point, New York. In 1783, in recognition of his services, the Continental Congress promoted him to brigadier general.
