Formerly a movie and vaudeville theater, the Rialto now hosts regular performances by the Tacoma Actors' Guild, Northwest Sinfonietta, the Puget Sound Revels and the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association.
It is a 742-seat facility and was designed in the Beaux Arts style by Rolland Borhek. The movie theatre opened September 1918 and functioned as such through the 1980's.
In 1990 a nonprofit organization with funding from the City of Tacoma and its City Council, bought the theater and remodeled it to accommodate live performances. The organization is called the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and continues to manage the three theatres in the theatre district of Tacoma: The Pantages, the Rialto, and the Theatre in the Square.
