Henry John Patch was the last surviving soldier known to have fought in the trenches of the First World War, also briefly the oldest man in Europe.

Harry was born in Combe Down, near Bath, Somerset, on the 17th June 1898 and at the time of his death, aged 111 years, 1 month, 1 week and 1 day, on 25th July 2009, he was the third-oldest man in the world, the oldest man in Europe and the 77th oldest man ever.
His memorial is a bronze plaque mounted on a rough hewn sandstone block in the grounds of Wells Museum. It reads:-
