Following the Japanese attacks on Broome in 1942 which resulted in the loss of 16 flying boats, the establishment of a safe haven for flying boats was deemed essential, the prerequisites were - “South and inland”.
On 1st April,it was decided to the facility at Lake Boga as the lake was almost circular and free from obstructions, enabling landings from any direction. The first Catalina serviced at Lake Boga was A24-17, on August 5th, 1942.
Apart from Catalinas, also serviced, repaired, restored, rebuilt or overhauled were Dorniers, Sikorsky KingFishers, Sunderlands, Walrus and Martin Mariners.
