Gian Giacomo Galletti was one of the most important benefactors of the ossola valley. The Galletti foundation was an important factor for the development of Domodossola and the surrounding area in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was born in 1789 in poor circumstances. At the age of 14 he worked at the construction of the Simplon road, the he became a peddlar in Switzerland, later he settled down in Milan as a merchant and then moved to Paris as a wealthy banker. He donated a foundation in his home town Domodossola before he died in 1873.
The monument on the square in front of the town hall was created by Francesco Ricci in 1899. The marble sculpture of a Roman goddess holds a shield with the relief portrait of Gelletti. The pedestal has the simple inscription: "A
G.G.GALLETTI / L’OSSOLA"
