It is the island of Aix, that Napoleon spent his last days on French soil, the July 12 to 15 1815, before embarking for exile. Housed in the house of the commander of the place which he had himself ordered the construction in 1808, the Emperor wrote it the draft of the famous letter which placed him under the protection of the British government. This house was bought in 1926 by Baron Napoleon Gourgaud, great grand-son of General Gaspard Gourgaud, Napoleon's companion in St. Helena. Transformed into a Napoleonic museum and opened to the public in 1928, the house was given to the national museums in 1933 by the Baron and Baroness Gourgaud. Since 1959, it reports to the National Museum of the Palaces of Malmaison and Bois Préau.

C'est à l'île d'Aix que Napoléon passa ses derniers jours en terre française, du 12 au 15 juillet 1815, avant de s'embarquer pour l'exil. Installé dans la maison du commandant de la place dont il avait lui-même ordonné la construction en 1808, l'Empereur y rédigea le brouillon de la célèbre lettre qui le plaçait sous la protection du gouvernement britannique. Cette maison fut achetée en 1926 par le baron Napoléon Gourgaud, arrière petit-fils du général Gaspard Gourgaud, compagnon de Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène. Transformée en musée napoléonien et ouverte au public en 1928, la demeure fut donnée aux musées nationaux en 1933 par le baron et la baronne Gourgaud. Depuis 1959, elle est rattachée au musée national des châteaux de Malmaison et de Bois Préau.
