The Bridgewater Canal originally opened in 1761 and ran from Worsley to Manchester. An extension to this point at Preston Brook was completed in 1766.
Not far from here is a canal tunnel that forms a junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Although no longer used commercially the canal is popular with leisure boaters, cyclists and walkers and many people pass by here every day.
The books are housed in an old garden storage box and appear to have been placed by a local house owner whose garden backs on to the canal tow path.
