De schoorsteen van de TU/e is gebouwd als rookgasafvoer van het centraal ketelhuis in 1958. De hoogte van de schoorsteen is 70 meter en aan de voet heeft deze een diameter van 5,3 meter. Via drie ondergrondse rookkanalen is de schoorsteen verbonden met de ketels die tot 2005 dienst deden als centrale heetwatervoorziening.
De uit gemetselde kop van deze schoorsteen maakt deze schoorsteen bijzonder, in Nederland zijn nog slechts twee schoorstenen met deze architectuur. Graag wil de TU/e deze schoorsteen als markant punt voor de toekomst behouden.
De technische staat van de schoorsteen is goed, tweejaarlijks wordt de schoorsteen geïnspecteerd door een gespecialiseerd bedrijf. Omdat deze schoorsteen niet meer in gebruik is zullen voorzieningen getroffen moeten worden om hem in deze staat te houden. Om te voorkomen dat zwavel afkomstig uit de vroegere oliestook en vocht het metselwerk aantast, worden in 2007 maatregelen getroffen. Deze maatregelen houden in dat de schoorsteen aan de bovenzijde wordt afgedicht, waarbij toch natuurlijke ventilatie in de schoorsteen aanwezig blijft.
English abstract:
The chimney of the TU was built in 1958, as a smoke outlet from the central boiler house (uses for hot water supply). The height of the chimney is 70 meters and the basis has a diameter of 5.3 meters. The chimney is connected to the boiler by three underground flues which served until 2005.
In the Netherlands there are only two chimneys with this architecture. The technical condition of the chimney is good, every two years the chimney is inspected by a specialized company.
