The substation was originally built in 1881, but it was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906. It was rebuilt after the quake by William Polk. The structure has ornamental pieces above the entrance-way. The substation functioned until 1924. In the 2000s, it was converted by Daniel Liebeskind into the Contemporary Jewish Museum.
