The relief shows the Evangelist Marcus sign the Markus-Lion (a lion with wings) with an open book (PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS).

"Verona was since 1405 under Venetian rule. After the end of the Venetian Republic Verona went to Austria with the Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797; the previous one, anti-French uprising of the Verona at Easter was bloodily suppressed. Under Austrian rule, the city was part of the northern Italian Quadrilateral (it .: Quadrilatero), which was to defend the Austrian possessions in Italy in Peschiera, Mantova ( Mantua), Legnago and Verona built 1815th. The expansion was made by Austrian 1833-1866 pioneers designed by the engineer General Franz Scholl. 1866 Verona came as a result of the German War to the Kingdom of Italy."
