Picnic Pavilion with Exhibit - Ricker Pond State Park - Groton, VT - Civilian Conservation Corps on Waymarking.com

In Groton, within Groton State Forest, is Ricker State Park, which was the beneficiary of several CCC projects, including this picnic pavilion.

Ricker State Park is now a campground, located on the east side of Vermont Route 232. I'm not sure about any fees or limits to access if you are not staying at the campground. I stayed at the campground for a night. The featured structure is located at the end of a drive for the tent and trailer portion of the campground - the eastern cluster of sites. It is near a small beach at Ricker Pond.

The wooden structure has two sections. One is open on three sides, and walled - with a stone fireplace - on the fourth wall. The second section is fully enclosed with windows and a door. Both sections have a peaked roof.

The park web site has an excellent document about CCC activity in Groton Woods. This is what it says about Ricker Pond State Park.

" In 1933, CCC Company 1217 from New York City was stationed at Ricker Mills and then followed by Company 1162 in 1935. Ricker Pond was originally a picnic area with a log shelter, 10 picnic sites with
stone fireplaces, and a staff cabin (rangers quarters). Where the current campsite #1 exists, you can find an 8’ granite picnic table carved into the rock. In 1941-42, another small cabin was built, which is used today as a weekly rental cottage. "

I was not able to see the granite table in camp site 1 along the eastern drive as there were campers occupying the location and it isn't easy to see into the site.

In the picnic table area is a temporary exhibit that was about recent projects done by modern groups to restore park facilities, including the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps. On it had this statement:

"Perry Merrill was the State Forester from 1930-1955 and was instrumental in bringing the Civilian Conservation Corps to Vermont..."
