Work began on the building for the Van Allens in 1913. The building is similar to the Carson Pirie Scott store in Chicago, but at a much smaller scale. It is a four story building constructed as a steel frame with lareg plate glass windows. The steel frame is encased in concrete and faced with brick. At the top the building has foliate ornamentations, which is very Sullivanesque. There has been only minor remodeling done to the building since its erection.
