The observatory of Metzerlen is located in the agricultural zone east of Metzerlen, about 15 kilometers south of the disturbing lights of the city.
The equipment consists of a 60cm Cassegrain reflector telescope, a 40cm Schmidt camera, a Zeiss refractor APQ 130/1000 and a 15cm Lichtenknecker refractor.
When the institute was closed in 2007, the observatory was taken over by a group of astronomy enthusiasts. In 2011 this association was transformed to a non-profit foundation, that is mainly funded by donations. The name of the foundation is Regio-Sternwarte Metzerlen.
The observatory is usually open to the public about one evening per month. It's free of charge and there is no reservation needed. Groups up to 12 persons can book a guided tour for a small service charge. Donations are always welcome.
