The Presidency in Bergen approved the construction of town market in 1874 and confirmed conductor Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe was appointed as architect.
The building opened 1 July 1877, and was the only one of its kind in Norway. The city's market had at that time had 44 stalls and 27 basement stalls.
