At Wells River starts the Cross Vermont Trail at the eastern end.

The Cross Vermont Trail is a multi-use hiking and biking trail that runs the width of the northern portion of the state of Vermont.

The following is covered in Maps 1, 2, and 3 on the Cross Vermont Trail web site.

The trail east of Barre and Montpelier generally follows an old railroad bed and U.S. 302. and U.S. 2. There is a web site, (visit link) that has information about the trail, as well as detailed maps and directions. The trail is not easy to follow without the maps. There are signs, but the ones I saw were very small on sign posts. At several trail points, I didn't see a large kiosk anywhere about the trail itself. I found one that was about Groton Woods State Forest that had a map of the area, which the trail happens to go through. The trail itself starts on the east end of an arch bridge over the Connecticut River between the towns of Wells River, VT, and Haverhill, NH. The trail site states that the best place to park is on the New Hampshire side for the Ammunuusuc Rail Trail in Haverhill. Parallel to the arch bridge is a beautiful railroad iron trestle bridge. The next place of note as you walk up the road (Railroad Street) is the Welcome Center on the left. Unfortunately, I inquired about the Cross Vermont Trail, and even though it passes by the center, the volunteer there knew nothing about it. From the welcome center, the trail follows city streets, then U.S. 5, then U.S. 302 out of town. The trail then alternates between old railroad bed and the paved highway for several miles. At Groton State Forest, there are many campgrounds with tent and leanto sites. These are first come - first serve. The facilities have restrooms and showers. Beyond Groton Woods State Forest is the town of Marshfield and U.S. Route 2 where the trail turns onto and heads toward East Montpelier and, eventually, to Burlington.

A two-to-three day trip could be made by going from Wells River to Groton State Forest and back. The roads may not be the best way to hike, but the trip off the trail, especially in Groton State Forest, have worthwhile views.

According to the web site, the association is constantly trying to improve the trails and get sections off the highways. Check back for the latest information.
