The Maine State Pier is a city owned facility that can accommodate large cruise ships. It was completed in 1924. In 2009, the Portland City Council approved spending $2.4 million to redevelop the end of pier. Improvements included the creation of an outdoor music venue with a capacity of 3,000

The Maine State Pier is Portland's vibrant waterfront district where you will find restaurants, boutique shops, and fishing boats. A visitor information booth is located just outside the cruise terminal, where you can pick up city maps. The city of Portland is build on a hillside north of the waterfront. An uphill walk will take you to Congress Street city center, the downtown arts district, or the Esplanade Promenade. A 450' long Robert Wyland mural "Whales off the Coast of Maine" is located at the Maine State Pier.
