Lucerne is a city in central Switzerland, in the German-speaking portion of the country. Lucerne is the capital of the Canton of Lucerne and the capital of the district of the same name. With a population of about 80,501 people, Lucerne is the most populous city in Central Switzerland, and a nexus of transportation, telecommunications, and government of this region.
Afterthe fire which destroyed the city's mills in 1875, the local business cooperative built a powwer plant comprising of three Jonval terbines at Muhlenplatz in 1887*89. The turbines' total power was 60kW. After almost 90 years of operation, more and more defects due to age and use began to show. This is why the plant had to be shut down for safety reasons in 1997.
