The Vietnamese Boat People Monument of Gratitude in Northbridge depicts a tiny fishing boat on top of a towering wave, around the base are the words:-"Vietnamese Boat People Monument of Gratitude" in english on one side and in vietnamese on the other. On the wall surrounding the monument are four plaques , three relating to the dedication of the memorial and the fourth which reads :- "In memory of the Vietnamese refugees who perished in the exodus since 1975,"
The term ‘boat people’ entered the Australian vernacular in the 1970s with the arrival of the first wave of boats carrying people seeking asylum from the aftermath of the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese boat people suffered many problems including hunger, storms, pirates, getting lost and capsizing on their journeys. It is unclear how many people died but the number is estimated to be as high as 500,000. number was estimated to be as high as 500,000.
