There were four Canadian Coast Guard ships in port at Dartmouth when we visited. The Matthew was one.

The Matthew was built by Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc. of North Vancouver, BC and launched in 1990. Built primarily as a hydrographic survey platform, as a member of the Canadian Coast Guard it also responds to search and rescue incidents as necessary.

The other ships in port when we visited, all ocean going vessels, were the Edward Cornwallis(qv), the Corporal McClaren MMV and the Louis S. St-Laurent, normally stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland.

Class: Mid-shore Science Vessel. The Matthew is a medium-sized vessel capable of sustained operations away from port for up to 14 days; has endurance for 21 days. It is a hydrographic survey platform, carrying out geophysical and oceanographic work, as well as responding to search and rescue incidents.
